The procedure varies depending on the vehicle model and sensor location (rear or front bumper, side or center). General steps: (1) Identify the faulty sensor: use a diagnostic tool to read fault codes, or listen for the clicking sound (a silent sensor is usually dead). (2) Access the sensor: this often requires removing the bumper or, in some vehicles, accessing from behind through wheel wells or trim panels. (3) Disconnect the wiring: carefully unplug the sensor connector by pressing the release tab. (4) Remove the sensor: most sensors are held in place by a clip or a bracket; gently push the retaining tabs and pull the sensor out. (5) Prepare the new sensor: if it is unpainted, paint it to match the vehicle color, ensuring the paint thickness does not exceed the limit (120-150 µm). (6) Install the new sensor: push it into the bracket until it clicks. (7) Reconnect the wiring: plug in the connector securely. (8) Reinstall the bumper or trim. (9) Test the system: engage reverse gear and check for correct operation; use a diagnostic tool to clear fault codes and verify communication. The tools required: a trim removal tool (plastic prying tool) to detach the bumper clips, a socket set (10 mm, 13 mm) for bumper bolts, a flathead screwdriver for connector tabs, a T20 or T25 Torx driver for some vehicles, and for painting, a spray gun or touch-up paint. It is essential to have the correct replacement sensor: identical part number, same frequency (40 kHz), same connector type (3-pin or 4-pin), and same output type (LIN, PWM, analog). Using a wrong sensor may cause the system to malfunction or not work at all. The replacement sensor can be OEM or high-quality aftermarket, but it must meet the specifications. Many aftermarket sensors come with a universal mounting bracket and a connector adapter, but it is best to use an exact match.

The precautions for handling the bumper: when removing the bumper, support it to prevent it from falling and damaging the paint or the wiring harness. Disconnect the fog lights and other sensors if present. Use plastic trim tools to avoid scratching the paint. When removing the sensor, be gentle with the retaining clips; they can break. If the clip is broken, the new sensor may not stay in place; in that case, the bracket must be replaced. Use a diagnostic tool to read the sensor's live data; the distance reading should change as you move a target towards it. Clear any stored fault codes. Some vehicles require a coding or initialization procedure when a new sensor is installed, especially if the sensor has a unique ID (LIN bus). This is usually done with a diagnostic tool: select the new sensor's position and perform the "coding" or "teach-in" procedure. Follow the vehicle manufacturer's instructions. If the sensor is not detected, check the wiring and the connector. After a successful replacement, the PDC system should function as before, providing reliable parking assistance.
